The Plenary Session of the Party’s Central Committee, as stated in an AKEL press release, reaffirmed as a non-negotiable goal the need to change the country’s course, laying the groundwork for seeking partnerships and selecting a candidate who will embody progressive change.
The statement reads as follows
The Plenary Session of AKEL’s Central Committee met today to discuss the Party’s political framework, strategy, and roadmap for the 2028 Presidential Elections. The Central Committee reaffirmed that AKEL is entering the Presidential Elections with the non-negotiable goal of bringing about progressive change in the country’s governance in 2028. AKEL is moving forward with determination and optimism to build the political and social majority needed for the progressive change that our country and our people require.
For AKEL, progressive change does not merely mean a change in personnel; it means, first and foremost, a change in the country’s course, with the following as its guiding principles:
• a solution to the Cyprus problem, an end to the Turkish occupation, and the reunification of our homeland and our people
• a new economic model for Cyprus that will guarantee sustainable development and a more just society, one that will address growing inequalities, the cost-of-living crisis and the housing crisis, and that will preserve the environment and the country’s national wealth for future generations
• the protection of labor rights and the strengthening of the welfare state
• the protection of the country’s strategic infrastructure, critical services, and national wealth from massive sell-offs to foreign capital
• the restoration of the rule of law and the fight against corruption and cronyism
• the defense of democracy against fascism and the far right
• a multidimensional foreign policy based on principles that, instead of aligning with the U.S. and Israel and serving their interests, will be committed to international law, peace, and will serve the interests and security of our people.
Today’s decision marks the starting point of the Party’s organized campaign toward the presidential election. In the coming period, a dialogue will begin—based on the political framework—with Party members, the Social Alliance, and with individuals and groups who have aligned themselves with AKEL for progressive change in 2028.
At the same time, the Central Committee authorized the Party leadership to engage in discussions with other political forces, organized groups, and prominent figures with the aim of forging partnerships based on programmatic convergence.
Finally, through the Party’s collective processes, a proposal will be formulated for the Extraordinary Pan-Cypriot Electoral Convention to select the candidate who embodies all the qualities necessary to represent progressive change.
AKEL extends a broad call to the entire Left and to all progressive and democratic forces in Cypriot society to join their voices with the forces of progressive but, so that we may restore hope to our country and our people.
