Investigations into the GSI resume: French research vessel ready, awaiting NAVTEX

Brussels is satisfied with the project's progress
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The research vessel Abeille Marengo has been docked at the port of Heraklion for the past three days and will continue its surveys for the laying of the power interconnection cable between Greeceand Cyprus.

For the surveys to resume, the Heraklion Hydrographic Station must issue the necessary NAVTEX, which is expected in early November.

The Greek government remains confident that everything will proceed smoothly, anticipating that the Turks will engage in an “ANTINAVTEX” paper war without interrupting the surveys.

KOSTIS HATZIDAKIS—Vice President of the Greek Government: “We are moving
forward without conducting foreign policy for domestic consumption. Without outcries or commotion. And we will proceed in the same manner regarding the cable issue.”

Pending further developments, the Energy Ministers of Cyprus and Greece held a trilateral meeting in Luxembourg with the European Commissioner.

DAN JORGENSEN—European Commissioner for Energy
“I am pleased to hear from the Ministers of Greece and Cyprus that the EU-supported GSI is moving forward. This is a key strategic energy interconnection, one of the European ‘Energy Corridors.’”

The three men also had the opportunity to discuss this in Brussels, during the Energy Council meeting.

MICHALIS DAMIANOS—Minister of Energy: “It is
very important that we are discussing the networks; we need more investment in storage and more investment in interconnections.”

STAVROS PAPASTAVROU—Greek
Minister of Energy
“I will brief my counterparts on the progress made in implementing the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection, as well as on the next steps. This is a project of strategic importance for Europe that is moving forward according to plan and with determination, always in accordance with the Law of the Sea.”

As reported by media outlets in Greece, the Greek Minister of Energy, on the occasion of the ratification of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, pointed out that Turkey’s interpretation of the Law of the Sea also poses obstacles for the GSI.
