Views regarding the prospects for achieving progress that could lead to the convening of an expanded conference before the end of the term of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, were discussed at a meeting today between AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín, AKEL reports in a statement.
According to the statement, the meeting between the AKEL General Secretary and Ms. Olguín took place “in a very positive atmosphere.”
“During the meeting, views were exchanged regarding the prospects for achieving progress, which could lead to the convening of an expanded conference before the end of Mr. Antonio Guterres,” the statement said.
It should be noted that, on the part of AKEL, “we reiterated our position that the common ground achieved to date must be presented to both sides and utilized as a basis for the resumption of substantive negotiations.”
“To that end, we emphasized the need to make progress and reiterated AKEL’s proposal for an agreement on a specific roadmap based on full respect for the negotiating achievements up to the end of the Dconference in Crans-Montana, including the convergences and the Guterres Framework,” the statement adds.
It is also noted that the confidence-building measures (CBMs) currently on the table were discussed, “as well as their importance in the effort to create a better political climate and foster trust between the two communities, while emphasizing, however, that CBMs, however important they may be, cannot replace the importance of resuming substantive negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.”
“Our goal remains to capitalize on the current circumstances and create real prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis, with political will, consistency, and determination,” the statement concludes.
