Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea continued the team’s free fall, as it remains just above the relegation zone.
Michael Carrick’s team has not won any of its last nine matches across all competitions—its worst streak since September 1984!
However, the United manager—who many predicted would be fired following last Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth— expects to be on the bench as usual for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford.
When asked by TNT Sports if he expects to be in charge for that game, Carrick replied, “Yes.” When asked about his future during the post-match press conference, the United manager stated: “Right now, all I’m thinking about is preparing the boys for next week’s game.”
For the first time since the 1973–74 season—when the team was last relegated— United has failed to win any of its first seven away games across all competitions.
When asked if the team has the right mindset to handle the situation, now that they’re near the bottom of the standings, Carrick replied: “You can look at it that way. But you can also look at how quickly you can climb the standings, as long as you win games. That’s definitely the approach we need to take.”
Referring to the boos from the team’s fans, Carrick told TNT Sports: “There’s a lot of emotion involved. We’re a great club, but we want to win games. The fans put in a lot of effort and spend a lot of money to watch us play. Today [Saturday] it seemed like the players had approached the game the right way, but then everything went wrong and the situation fell apart very quickly. There are a lot of emotions right now.”
