AKEL issued an immediate response to the Democratic Alarm’s statement, rejecting the criticisms and alleging that DISY is attempting to divert attention from the internal party problems it faces.
The left-wing party reiterates the responsibilities of the Anastasiades and Christodoulides governments, accusing them of serving major interests at the expense of society, while making it clear that it will continue its criticism and the struggle for “progressive change.”

AKEL’s statement in response to DISY, verbatim:
In his speech yesterday before the Central Committee, the General Secretary of AKEL was very clear in his criticism: DISY has been in power for the past 13 years.
First the Anastasiades government and now the Christodoulides government are rolling out the red carpet for big business, prioritizing huge profits over the interests of society, dismantling the welfare state and labor relations, leaving thousands of small and medium-sized business owners at the mercy of inflation, and fueling institutional corruption and collusion with their policies and actions.
Obviously, DISY is using anti-AKEL rhetoric to cover up the various internal party problems it faces. But it no longer convinces anyone by responding to justified criticism with the tired old refrain of “the evil AKEL.”
They’ve driven the country into a dead end and expect us to applaud them. AKEL will continue to offer well-documented criticism and put forward positions and proposals. And it will fight with all its might to achieve what our country so desperately needs: progressive change.
