DIMAL is in the past after 15 months; what happened to “Sikou Pano”?

"Solidarity" is also being "erased"
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Eight parties were formed before the 2026 parliamentary elections; seven remain, and it is possible that only six will remain.

“Democratic Change” folded 15 months after its founding. The party was registered in the Register of Political Parties on July 25, 2025, and its removal from the Registry was announced in a publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus on October 30, 2026.

As DIMAL President Christos Clerides told Alphanews.Live, the decision to dissolve the party was made by the party’s Political Bureau following the parliamentary elections, as the results of the May elections were deemed disappointing.

At the same time, the party’s limited financial resources were deemed insufficient, and there were also organizational problems, with Mr. Clerides noting the absence of complete candidate lists in all districts and the absence of candidates in Larnaca and Paphos.

Mr. Clerides stated that, based on a poll, it was found that DIMAL was not well known to the general public.

Now, Mr. Clerides emphasized, they will continue to work from their respective positions, while stressing that they remain committed to their positions and views on the necessity of reforming and modernizing the state and on a just solution based on human rights.

“Solidarity” Is Also Being “Erased”

The “Solidarity” Movement has also submitted a request for removal from the register of political parties. As Deputy Election Commissioner Menelaos Vassiliou informed us, the application is currently under review.

DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos had announced “Solidarity’s” merger with the Democratic Party as early as 2025, while Eleni Theocharous had foreshadowed the “formal dissolution” of “Solidarity” months earlier, on the day nominations were submitted for the parliamentary elections.

What about “Sikou Pano”?

Christophoros Tornaritis had raised questions about the future of “Sikou Pano” in a post of his.

He wrote on his personal X account that “Sikou Pano has been DELETED as a political party. As an idea and my life’s motto, it will remain within me forever! I’ll keep shouting it everywhere—in the streets, on the beaches, and in the parks!”

However, as Mr. Vassiliou told us, no request to deregister “Sikou Pano” has been received by the Agency so far.

Alphanews.Live contacted the President of “Sekou Pano,” Sotiris Christou, who told us that the party is in a state of uncertainty, with the scenario mentioned by Mr. Tornartitis appearing to be the most likely outcome.

He also stated that the issue is not that there is a lack of agreement among the members, but rather that there are no individuals willing to step forward and assume leadership positions. He added that when you can’t support something, why continue with it?

At the same time, there is communication with smaller parties, and joining another party is not ruled out.

28 active parties

In response to our question about whether any applications to register a new party had been submitted since May, Mr. Vassiliou replied in the negative.

Now, following the deregistration of DIMAL, Cyprus has 28 active political parties, a number that will “settle” at 27 following the deregistration of “Solidarity.”
