As of today, the operation of twelve support programs run by the Ministry of Education is being put on hold, including the State Institutes for Continuing Education, the Continuing Education Centers, Music Schools, apprenticeship programs, Post-Secondary Training and Continuing Education Institutes, and environmental centers. The reason? The indefinite strike actions being carried out by employees because:
- Those who have been converted to permanent positions have gone unpaid for five months
- Fixed-term positions have not been advertised, resulting in many professionals becoming unemployed
The strikers will hold a protest rally this coming Thursday, November 5, 2026, outside the Ministry of Finance and will march to the Presidential Palace.
The General Secretary of OEKDY-SEK, George Konstantinou, stated on the Alpha Kalimera program that following the House of Representatives’ acknowledgment that support program staff had been working for a decade under the unfair service procurement regime, their hiring on a permanent basis was institutionalized. However, they are still unable to receive unemployment benefits, even following a relevant opinion from the Legal Service.
“A political decision remains to be made, and we wonder why the government is having difficulty making this decision.”
