The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, states that he is determined not to get involved in the campaign for the presidential election and responds sharply to those who criticize himby accusing him of “pork-barrel politics” ahead of February 2028. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Major Development Projects, he explained that he has been hearing talk of an election campaign since the very first day he took office in March 2023 and pointed out that “Others have started the election campaign, but we will not be drawn into getting involved in something like that.”
“You talk to me about making empty promises, and at the same time I hear that we’re not taking action, and so on. I’m not going to get involved. We have so many serious issues to deal with, starting with the Cyprus problem, many issues of domestic governance, reforms, pension reform, and many others on the horizon. And under no circumstances will I get involved in an election campaign.”
At the same time, President Christodoulides expressed respect for the right of politicians and political parties to begin their election campaigns now and to criticize him on a daily basis.
“We are not going to get involved in an election campaign.”
