Serres: Migrants escape from the closed facility in Kleidi

The absence of the 10 migrants was immediately noticed
ALPHANEWSLIVE

A new incident—an escape, this time—occurred at the closed migrant facility in Kleidi, in the municipality of Sintiki, Serres. Specifically, last night (November 1) shortly after 7 p.m., 10 migrants from Bangladesh, taking advantage of the darkness, found a weak spot in the facility’s fence and managed to escape.

The absence of the 10 migrants was immediately noticed, and police forces rushed to search for them in the surrounding area, managing to locate seven of them, while three migrantsmanaged to escape and are still being sought.

The closed facility has long been plagued by a series of incidents, including riots; this is the second escape, following another one last August when 40 people scaled the fence, and the police found 27 of them.

Currently, approximately 120 migrants from Bangladesh and Egypt are staying at the facility, while the damage caused to the facility by the riots is extensive, and a number of infrastructure elements are inoperable.

A number of organizations, such as the Serres Police Officers’ Union, have called for the permanent closure of the facility in Kleidi, arguing that it is unsuitable to operate as a closed facility.

“We’ve become a cliché by repeating the same warnings. But the reality hasn’t changed, and the problems remain. How many more escapes must occur? How many more incidents must happen? How many times must the safety of our colleagues be put at risk before it is realized that this facility cannot continue to operate under these conditions?

Our Union has repeatedly and in every possible way warned about the serious infrastructure deficiencies, the safety issues, and the dangerous conditions under which police officers are required to serve. These are no longer isolated incidents. This is an ongoing, recurring situation that has not been effectively addressed. Enough is enough! Our position is now crystal clear: “CLOSE THE SINTIKI FACILITY ONCE AND FOR ALL,” Yiannis Kounios, president of the Serres Police Officers’ Union, told protothema.gr.
