The government “continues to shortchange” the Famagusta district, which remains without a public university, despite the announcements made by the President of the Republic, according to a recent announcement by the Famagusta EOA.
As noted, in February 2025, the President of the Republic announced the creation of two university faculties in the Famagusta district. “Twenty months have passed, and we are still waiting. Without a specific timeline, without clear commitments, and without visible results,” the statement reads.
At the same time, he adds, Larnaca is moving forward with the creation of a new faculty at CUT. “We welcome every effort to develop other districts, but we cannot accept the ongoing unequal treatment of Famagusta,” the statement notes.
According to the statement, the President of the Famagusta District Local Government Organization, Yiannis Karousos, stated that the Famagusta district “cannot be treated as a second-class district. It is unacceptable to announce the establishment of university departments and, nearly two years later, still not know when and how they will be implemented. The government must treat all districts equally.”
It should be noted that the creation of university departments is not merely an educational endeavor, but an investment in the region’s future, in its youth, in the economy, and in research and development.
The EOA calls on the government to respond immediately regarding the status of the two university faculties that were announced, what actions have been taken to date, when implementation will begin, and when they will become operational.
