What we actually pay at the pump: Here’s what the change in gas station receipts entails

Reactions from the companies
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Oil companies view with caution the legislative initiative requiring gas stations to include on their receipts all the components that make up the final pricepaid by the consumer.

Before the Energy Committee, where the relevant bill submitted by DISY MP Nikos Georgiou was discussed for the first time, the companies raised technical issues, pointing out that the regulation would require a technological upgrade of the systems, which would entail additional financial costs; among other things, the issue of disclosing sensitive information to competitors was also raised.

The proposal stipulates that the receipt must list in detail: the quantity of fuel purchased, the base price per liter excluding taxes and other fees, the excise tax, VAT, other charges, and the total final amount.

“This proposal does not promise magic solutions, nor does it claim that transparency alone will lower prices. However, it creates the conditions for citizens to have a complete picture of the tax burden and for the competent authorities to exercise more effective oversight.”
Nikos Georgiou – DISY Member of Parliament/Chair of the Energy Committee

“It is important that we find the right balance.”
Adamos Aspris – DIKO Member of Parliament

“This is a proposal with which we are in complete agreement, and we will support it.”
Irini Charalambidou – Member of Parliament, ALMA Movement

The Ministry of Finance emphasized the need to ensure that consumers are not burdened with additional costs; together with the Ministry of Energy, it expressed support for the proposal’s objective. The Consumers’ Association also came out in favor.

The reality at the pump remains difficult, despite the recent price drops. The average price of unleaded 95 is 1.71, diesel is 2 euros, and heating oil is 1.59.
