"We are in a process that points to positive developments," said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, noting that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín, had informed him during a phone conversation that specific announcements might be made over the weekend.
President Christodoulides was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the Agios Charalambos Embas High School and TESEK in Paphos.
When asked if there were any indications regarding the illegal visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to the occupied territories tomorrow, the President said he was unaware of this, adding that he had seen press reports about the Turkish Foreign Minister’s possible visit.

At the same time, he noted that he had spoken by phone with Ms. Olgin on Thursday morning. “We are in a process that, based on the information available so far, appears to be leading to positive developments. We are in a waiting phase—the phase of final answers, if you will—and, as the Personal Envoy also told me, we may have specific announcements by the weekend,” he emphasized.
“The Secretary-General is being kept constantly informed, and I sincerely hope we will have positive developments to announce, as outlined and as I am being briefed by the Personal Envoy,” he stressed.
When asked whether any developments are expected regarding the roadblocks, the President of the Republic recalled that the effort launched immediately after the UN Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus concerned issues of methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures, noting that “the discussion is broader.”
“The anxiety and desire of the Cypriot people are entirely justified,” he said. “I am working toward this goal, which is why we are constantly submitting proposals and approaches that—yes—I truly believe, if there is political will, can lead us to a resumption of talks,” he concluded.
