A 5.7-magnitude earthquake left more than twenty people injured overnight from Saturday to Sunday (local time) in central Japan, according to authorities and Japanese media.

The earthquake struck at 1:04 a.m. (6:04 p.m. Saturday, Cyprus time), at a depth of 40 kilometers, in an area west of Shizuoka Prefecture, or about 200 kilometers west of Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

According to the local newspaper “Chunichi Shimbun” and the Tokai television network, 24 people were injured in Shizuoka Prefecture and neighboring Aichi.

An emergency services official in Aichi told Agence France-Presse that 16 people had sustained minor injuries. Authorities in Shizuoka Prefecture, for their part, reported three injuries, including a 90-year-old woman who fell out of her bed.

Property damage, particularly broken storefront windows, were reported in affected cities, while train service in the earthquake-stricken area faced disruptions, including on the Shinkansen bullet trains.

Located above the point where four tectonic plates collide, the Japanese archipelago accounts for about 18% of the world’s perceptible seismic tremors each year.

The vast majority of these earthquakes have no consequences. However, the country remains haunted by the devastating magnitude 9 earthquake and the tsunami that struck on March 11, 2011, when the death toll and number of missing reached 18,500 and disaster struck the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
