The 24-year-old man who caused a deadly rampage in the city of Krakow, Poland, is currently under guard and in serious condition in the hospital.
At this time, he is not in a condition to be questioned so that charges can be filed against him for the carnage he caused.
Yesterday, at around 3 p.m., he drove his car into the historic Rynek Główny square, where he began shooting indiscriminately at people on the street.
He then moved to different parts of the square, resulting in additional victims. His car was involved in a collision in the area of Dietla and Stradomska Streets, where the perpetrator got out of the vehicle and also fired at police officers. Police returned fire, wounded him, and eventually subdued him.
A total of six people were killed and 16 were injured. Nearly all of the injured are in critical condition.
As it later emerged, the 24-year-old had murdered his parents and his sister at his home in the early hours of the morning…
He was eventually stopped by a police officer, who was also seriously injured and is in critical condition.
According to Polish authorities, the 24-year-old held a gun license and was in possession of a military-style rifle, most likely an AR-15, as well as additional weapons and ammunition in his car.
Initial assessments by the authorities suggest influence from far-right and ultra-nationalist ideology, though the motive has not yet been definitively established. The prosecutor’s office is proceeding with a criminal investigation of the case as a terrorist act.

“Thirty or more shots”
Witold Nuk, an eyewitness, saw people running in panic when he heard the first shots.
“It was a little after three when we suddenly heard strange sounds. One, two. And right after that, fifteen or twenty, maybe even thirty. In my estimation, there were thirty or even more. And they came in bursts,” he described.
“We saw people running in a panic, stumbling, some of them falling to the ground.” Even the horse-drawn carriages in the area began to flee the scene in terror.
Philip Vlontarz was in the central square with a friend, near a bar, when he heard the first gunshots. As he describes it, at first he didn’t realize the shots were real.
“We were walking in the square, near a bar, when suddenly the shooting started. I thought they were fireworks. Suddenly, everyone started running in all directions. That’s when my friend and I quickly ran into the bar.”
The situation became even more terrifying when the shooter’s car drove past the spot where they had taken refuge.
“A few seconds later, he started shooting again, and suddenly we saw the car drive right past us and come to a stop. Through the window, we could see him shooting from the car at people there in the square. As soon as we saw that, we ran away very quickly.”

“It was as if a lion had fallen onto the savanna”
Konrad, who was near a movie theater, describes the moment he realized that the sounds he was hearing were out of the ordinary.
“I was walking past the Pod Baranami movie theater, next to the police station in the main square. Suddenly, I started hearing gunshots. At first, I thought it was a firecracker. But the gunshots had a rhythm, they were repeated, and they were deep. Suddenly I turned around, and it was as if a lion had pounced on the savanna. Everyone started running; people were falling. And suddenly I saw a black car speed past the carriages. The horse and the coachman were thrown into the air. I saw gunshots coming out of the driver’s window and smoke.”
He eventually took refuge at the police station, where he found many people who had sought shelter.
“I went inside and there were a lot of people hiding on the floor. None of them spoke Polish; they were all tourists.”
“They were taking off their shirts to stop the bleeding.”
Particularly harrowing is the account of another eyewitness, who was near the intersection where the armed attack continued.
“We saw a crowd of people. Two people were lying at the intersection, next to cars. One of the cars had a bullet hole in the front windshield, and there were two people inside.”
What shocked him the most, however, was not just the sight of the injured, but the reaction of the people around them.
“What shocked us the most were the civilians who rushed to help. Passersby kept offering help. People were taking off their shirts to stop the bleeding of the injured who were lying on the ground. It was shocking.”
A woman who was in the area with her friends also described her experience on the Onet website. The group was walking near the Adam Mickiewicz monument when they heard the first loud bangs.
“We heard loud bangs. They sounded a bit like someone had set off firecrackers. Suddenly, a wave of people started running toward the entrance. We were swept up in the panic and started running too.”
The women managed to find refuge at the Wierzynek restaurant, where the staff locked the doors to protect the customers.
“No one knew what was happening. Some people were still walking around the square as if nothing had happened. We still didn’t know what had actually happened.”
