Gadi Eisenkot, the leader of the main opposition bloc, who was tasked with forming a government by Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
“If the members of Likud and Religious Zionism (editor’s note: the party of outgoing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich) sincerely believe that the time has come for unity (…) I see no reason why they should not support a government headed by me and based on the principles I have outlined,” Eizenkot said.
“We are going through one of the most critical periods the Israeli democracy has ever experienced,” he added.
However, he sent a message to those who might be sabotaging the formation of a government, saying:
“Anyone who tries to sabotage the formation of a government for personal rather than substantive reasons will go down in history as someone who failed to save Israel in a time of emergency. The public is watching us. This is a test of leadership,” he said.
