The Council of Ministers approved €4.8 million in government funding to promote recycling and the separate collection of organic waste, following two proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture. The funding covers the three-year period 2027–2029 and is intended to support local governments in meeting their obligations for more effective waste management.
In remarks following the Cabinet meeting, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis stated that state support is divided into two main pillars, with a total budget of €4.8 million.
How is the €4.8 million allocated?
Specifically, €1.5 million will be allocated to support communities and community clusters in the collection, transportation, and management of recyclable materials, where necessary.
At the same time, €3.3 million will be allocated for the separate collection and management of organic waste, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of relevant systems by local authorities.
Measurable Targets and Transitional Support
The funding will be transitional in nature and tied to specific, measurable targets to ensure the effective use of public resources.
As Christos Senekis pointed out, the goal is to provide practical support to local governments, to limit the financial burden on citizens during the transition period, and to create the conditions for a more effective and sustainable waste management system.
The approval of this funding is part of an effort to strengthen waste management infrastructure and systems, with an emphasis on both recycling and the separate collection of organic waste, in order to promote more sustainable practices at the local level.
