"Things have come to a head" for the residents of the Mitsero area. Yesterday’s rejection of the petition filed with the Supreme Court to suspend the relocation of the asphalt plant to the community has sparked strong reactions from local government authorities, who are now planning vigorous protests and intend to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

Agrokipia Community Leader Sotiris Kyriakou stated on the Alpha News program that, to date, the organized residents have not received a response to their request for a meeting with the President of the Republicto discuss the issue. As Mr. Kyriakou noted, the Community Leader of Mitsero has already moved his office to the site where the asphalt plant is scheduled to be relocated, so that citizens can go there and remain on site as a sign of protest.

“The people are a boiling cauldron. He’s set up a tent outside the asphalt plant; we’ll all gather there, everyone, and decide on our next steps.”

Mr. Kyriakou did not hide his disappointment that the residents had expected a vindication from the Supreme Court, yet the state and the judiciary “didn’t even allow room for dialogue.”

“Everyone is helping to get the factory up and running. In other words, the state and the judiciary are prioritizing economic interests above all else, and no one is considering the health of our residents. We will file a complaint against the government with the European Commission and call on it to visit our region.”
