Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris proposes a “red button” in the form of a watch for food delivery workers as a measure to combat the phenomenon of robberies and attacks committedon a daily basis on Cypriot streets.
Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, he noted that he has already held a meeting with the relevant stakeholders and representatives of the delivery platforms, to whom he recommended avoiding deliveries to particularly isolated or dangerous locations, as well as the implementation of an emergency alert system through which delivery drivers can notify their companies’ operations centers and immediately alert the police.
Mr. Fytiris acknowledged that the police cannot be everywhere or escort every delivery driver. At the same time, he noted that discussions are underway with the Chief of Police regarding the reinforcement of patrols and the optimal deployment of personnel, with the aim of increasing the number of police officers on the front lines.
Police Escorts and Legislation on Surveillance
Regarding police checkpoints, the Minister stated that the assignment or review of such details is based on a risk assessment by the Police, which covers both public figures and citizens who may be at risk.
Regarding legislation on surveillance, Mr. Fytiris said that consultations with the Legal Service are in their final stages, with the aim of finalizing the text and resubmitting it to Parliament.
As he noted, this legislation is a priority for the Ministry, as it is expected to strengthen the authorities’ tools for combating organized crime. He added, however, that technology is constantly evolving and equipment needs must be continuously assessed.
