His ruling regarding the woman who had accused Petros Filippidis of repeated rape —a charge for which the popular actor was later acquitted by the Court of Appeals—was announced today by the competent court following a lengthy trial.
The woman was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for three years. Petros Filippidis had sued the accuser for false accusation and slanderous testimony after he was acquitted of the rape charge.
Upon hearing the guilty verdict, the woman burst out shouting “Shame on you!” to which the presiding judge replied: “I want to be able to go home and have some peace. If I’m wrong, I’m only human, and mistakes can happen. Rest assured that I acted in good conscience. I could have come here and said, ‘Come on, let’s not make a big deal out of this.’ But that’s not why I studied law. I judge according to my conscience. I’m neither a fortune-teller nor God.”
It should be noted that the trial prosecutor had requested the defendant’s acquittal, arguing that there was insufficient evidence of her guilt. In its ruling, however, the court recognized the woman’s previous law-abiding life as a mitigating factor.
