The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, in a pre-recorded video message. As he noted, providing substantial support for families is a key priority of his administration, with an emphasis on creating conditions that will allow young people to plan their future with greater security, acquire their own home, and start a family.
In his message, the President referred to a series of measures that have already been implemented or are currently underway, covering areas such as housing, maternity, parental leave, benefits, childcare, and education. At the same time, he mentioned tax reform and the upcoming pension reform, emphasizing that the goal is to boost disposable income and provide more substantial support to families.
The President’s message in his own words:
Substantial, multi-faceted support for families lies at the core of our policies as a key measure for achieving our country’s goal of demographic recovery.
From the very first day we assumed governance of the country, we have been implementing policies so that more young people:
– Plan their future with confidence,
– can buy their own home,
– Start a family,
– Raise their children with security and prospects,
– Balance their professional and family lives.
More specifically:
– We are implementing housing programs worth 300 million euros,
– We have increased the childbirth allowance to 1,000 euros for the first child, 1,500 for the second, and 2,000 euros for each subsequent child,
– We have extended maternity leave from 18 to 22 weeks,
– We implemented the “Midwife at Home” program for new mothers,
– We launched in-home support provided by a social worker,
– We extended parental leave until the child turns 15,
– We increased the Child Allowance by 5% and up to 10% for lower-income families,
– We eliminated income criteria for the Child Allowance and student grants for families with five or more children,
– We increased overall government support for students by broadening the income criteria to assist more families,
– We subsidized tuition and meals for children up to four years of age, covering up to 100% of eligible tuition for older children,
– We established mandatory and free education starting at age four,
– We created new childcare facilities,
– We expanded the all-day school program.
At the same time, we launched the pilot implementation of the “Breakfast for All” program, and within this same framework, we also moved forward with tax reform, reducing the tax burden and increasing disposable income, while the next step is Pension Reform, to increase pensions and ensure the sustainability of the Social Security Fund.
Our goal and aspiration is for our young people to have more choices, for parents to receive meaningful support, and for families to have greater security for the future.
We are transforming Cyprus with policies that meet the needs of society and substantially improve the daily lives of every citizen.
