The attack on a female student—a member of the Patras Student Coordinating Committee and the KNE—which took place on Tuesday evening (November 3) in the Zarouchleika neighborhood of Patras, was condemned in a joint statement by the Achaea branches of the KKE and the KNE, who attributed the attack to a group of far-right extremists.
According to the complaint, the student was attacked by individuals who allegedly carried brass knuckles and knives, while members of the KNE who rushed to her defense were also injured.
A total of 12 people were arrested in connection with the incident, and eight of them were injured.
The Achaea branches of the KKE and the KNE describe this as an organized fascist attack, claiming that it was preceded by repeated attempts to intimidate the student, even outside her home.
The full statement reads:
“We condemn the organized fascist—criminal—attack targeting a pioneering student, a member of the Patras Student Coordinating Committee and a member of the KNE, carried out by thugs armed with metal knuckledusters, and knives, last night in Zarouchleika, as well as the injury of KNE members who stood by her side to defend her.
Last night’s attack followed a series of intimidation attempts, including ones carried out right outside her home in recent days.
They are deluded if they believe that such actions will terrorize the student movement and the members of the KKE and KNE.
We know that they are bothered by the pioneering role of the KKE and the KNE in organizing the youth struggle, by the student movement’s struggles against the suffocating conditions it faces every day, as well as in the struggle against the policies of the government and capital that are crushing the lives of working-class families.
The resurgence of fascist groups aims to terrorize and break the militant stance of the organized student, university, and labor movements.
No matter how much cover the bourgeois state, its institutions, and the parties of the system provide them, the fascists will end up where they belong: in the dustbin of history.
The labor movement has both the strength and the experience, through its organized struggle, to crush Nazi-fascist groups, while intensifying its action against the exploitative system that breeds and nurtures Nazism.
We call on the people of Patras and the city’s institutions to isolate the fascists in every school, school, and neighborhood, and to denounce the attempts by cowardly fascist-like thugs—the system’s watchdogs—to terrorize the students of our city.
Hands off our children! Fascists have no place in our schools or our neighborhoods! We will not give them any space to stand, nor their rotten ideas!”
The police statement regarding the incident
“Last night in Patras, officers from the Patras Rapid Response Unit, the DI.AS. and the Patras Sub-Directorate for Crime Prosecution and Investigation, twelve Greek nationals, one of whom was a minor, against whom charges were filed—as appropriate—for affray, grievous bodily injury, and violations of drug and weapons laws.
