SOS from the addiction treatment authority: Serious risks from cannabis compounds in e-cigarette liquids

Concerns about products circulating unchecked on the market
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Addiction Treatment Authority has issued a stern warning to the public regarding e-cigarette liquids and herbal products that may contain potent psychoactive substances, without users being aware of their actual composition.

In a related announcement, it is stated that as part of an inspection conducted in collaboration with the Cyprus Police, the Pharmaceutical Services, and the Public Health Service, products were seized from a store selling CBD and related products.

The seized items included e-cigarette liquids, plant material in the form of cigarettes, and other plant material. Laboratory analyses confirmed the presence of cannabinoids, and six different cannabinoids were detected in a single e-cigarette liquid.

Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

The Risks of Use

Of particular concern is the fact that products that may be perceived as low-risk may in fact contain potent psychoactive substances, without consumers being aware of it.

As noted in the warning, the effects of many of these substances on the human body have not been adequately studied, and the consequences of using this specific mixture remain unknown.

The use of such products may be associated with tachycardia, severe drowsiness, confusion, anxiety, or panic attacks. In more serious cases, there is a risk of poisoning or the onset of psychotic symptoms.

The relevant authorities emphasize that the sale of a product in a store is no guarantee of safety. Neither its appearance, nor its smell, nor its name can confirm its actual composition.

Recommendations for Consumers

The public is urged to avoid using products of unknown composition and, if they have a product that may be affected by this warning, to stop using it.

In addition, the following is recommended:

  • Do not combine such products with alcohol or other substances.
  • Avoid driving after using them.
  • Keep them out of the reach of children.
  • If you feel unwell, seek medical help, inform healthcare professionals about the product used, and keep the packaging.

In the event of loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, or seizures, the instructions are clear: call 112 immediately for an ambulance and do not leave the person alone.
