North Korea is "suspected" by the FBI of being behind the cyberattack on the Binance cryptocurrency exchange, in which $6.3 billion was stolen.
Specifically, the FBI reported that hackers from the TraderTraitor group, which is backed by the North Korean regime, are responsible for the large-scale cyberattack.
It noted that it had determined that members of this group attempted to convert the stolen funds into Ethereum cryptocurrency, and predicted that similar actions would follow.
Meanwhile, the Binance platform announced that it has reimbursed 90% of the stolen funds. The remaining 10% consists of digital assets (tokens) with lower liquidity, meaning that recovering them will take more time.
“We have recovered 90% of the stolen assets and are committed to covering the remaining 10%. Our users will not bear the financial burden of this incident,” assured Binance co-CEO Richard Teng.
Experts consider the cyberattack to be the largest cryptocurrency theft ever. A preliminary investigation revealed that the breach may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to one of the platform’s engineers, allowing hackers to gain access to one of its systems and carry out unauthorized withdrawals, according to Binance.
