The death toll from the shooting in Krakow’s tourist district has risen to six, with 15 people injured, local authorities and police announced.
“One of the people injured in the incident in Krakow’s main square has died. The death toll now stands at six: four women and two men,” the police said in a statement.
A man driving his vehicle today at noon through the tourist-filled central square of the Old Town, which was packed with people, began shooting indiscriminately at passersby from inside his car.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński stated that the suspect was “shot and neutralized” by police and is in serious condition, undergoing a second surgery. Kierwiński also said there is no evidence that there was more than one perpetrator. He added that the suspect appears to have held “very radical views” and that “several weapons were found” in the car he was driving.
In any case, the investigation is ongoing, with initial reports indicating that the suspect is a 25-year-old Polish national, whose home is currently being searched. The Polish Minister of the Interior also noted that all indications suggest the perpetrator was inspired by “far-right ideologies.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will travel to Krakow tonight, his spokesperson announced. “What happened today in Kraków has shocked the whole of Poland,” Adam Szlapka wrote on Twitter. “The prime minister is on his way to Kraków.”
