Following written assurances from Turkey that it will adhere to the established protocols, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is expected to travel to Antalya to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31). Meanwhile, Brussels is moving forward with a new initiative on the Cyprus issue, with a high-level meeting between the European Union and Turkey scheduled for October.
According to a report from Brussels by Alpha’s correspondent, Giorgos Georgiadis, the President of the Republic revealed that the European Union requested and received written assurances from the Turkish government, ensuring that no actions would be taken that could lead to an elevation of Tufan Erhürman’s status during the Conference. As he noted, provided these assurances are upheld in practice, Nicosia will be satisfied.
The issue of the Republic of Cyprus’s participation is also reflected in the conclusions of the European Council, which included a specific reference to the Antalya Conference, to be held from November 9 to 20. Specifically, the European Council underscores the importance of the equal participation and treatment of all European Union member states both at the Conference and at related high-level events, while reaffirming the principle of solidarity among Member States.
At the same time, new momentum is emerging on the Cyprus issue, with President Christodoulides announcing a meeting between the European Union and Turkey at the highest level before the end of October. The talks will focus both on efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue and on the prospect of progress in EU-Turkey relations.
“Yesterday I was informed that, following up on the meetings we had in New York—including those with the United Nations Secretary-General— as well as the meetings the heads of the institutions had with the Secretary-General, a meeting between the European Union and Turkey will take place in October, at the highest level, in order to discuss the two processes—the effort to resume talks, as well as potential progress in EU-Turkey relations,” stated the President of the Republic.
