“A picture is worth a thousand words,” as the old Chinese proverb goes. The side-by-side presence of Giorgos Pamboridis and Averof Neophytou, both during the thanksgiving service at the Holy Archdiocese and during the student parade marking the anniversary of “OXI,” provided the most powerful shot of unity for the battered Democratic Alarm party, whose internal landscape resembles a bombed-out wasteland.
Yesterday’s statement by Haris Georgiadis that he will not support Averof Neophytou for the Presidency of the Republic, and his simultaneous resignation from his position as president of the Glafkos Clerides Institute—which was not accepted by Annita Dimitriou—sparked a storm of reactions.
These reactions highlight that unity is still a long way off at Pindarou Street, despite the party president’s efforts to pick up the pieces.
ANNITA DIMITRIOU—DISY President: “Our internal issues
, the minor ones, will always exist. We’ll be there to address them. Not with extremism, but with a genuine call for unity that must prevail in practice. This also depends on everyone’s behavior. As party President, I assure you that this is my priority, and this is what I will do.”
When asked to comment on Haris Georgiadis’s resignation letter, the DISY President referred to her post from yesterday. In that post, she stated that the resignation would not be accepted, emphasizing that problems are solved through dialogue and not through resignations that threaten the party’s unity.
ANNITA DIMITRIOU—DISY President: “It is certainly
under threat. That is why I say it also depends on our attitudes and actions. And we must all put DISY first and foremost—and, of course, above DISY, our Cyprus.”
The fallout from Haris Georgiadis’s statement included, among other things, the resignation of the Special Advisor on Rule of Law Issues and NEDISY Spokesperson, Andreas TheologouManolis Theologou.
ANDREAS THEOLOGOU MANOLIS—
NEDISY Press Spokesperson: ““It pains me even more to see a political faction that should be discussing the Cyprus of tomorrow getting bogged down once again in personal strategies, ultimatums, mutual undermining, and introversion.”
“What is happening within DISY is to be expected,” stated the party’s former Parliamentary Spokesperson, Nikos Tornaritis.
NIKOS TORNARITIS—Former
DISY Parliamentary Spokesperson: “When an entire journey is built on a foundation of rigged cards, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, and blackmail—whether covert or overt—chaos is no accident. It is the inevitable result.”
