The Thessaloniki Film Festival was one of the first film festivals in the world to explore the eclectic connections between podcasts and cinema, incorporating this new art form and means of communication into its program—one that has now become part of the daily lives of countless people.
Alpha Cyprus and Alpha Podcasts are participating this year in the 67th Thessaloniki International Film Festival with the audio series “Zina Kanthers de Tyras: A Life in the Wind,” in the Nexus Section.
This selection holds particular significance for an audio production from Cyprus. The festival’s Nexus Section showcases works that stand out for their subject matter, their technique, and the way they harness the potential of the podcast format. This section approaches sound as a medium of storytelling: the voice, music, sounds, and rhythm as elements that can bring the listener closer to the people and the world of a story.
For “Zina Kanthers de Tyras: A Life in the Wind,” participation in Nexus is a recognition of the effort to share a well-known Cypriot story with the whole world—and at a film festival, no less.
The four-episode series is based on Zina Kanther’s autobiography, “A Life in the Wind,” published in 1968. It follows the true story of Theognosia from Tala, Paphos—the woman who became known as Princess Zina Kanther de Tyras.
The narrative begins in 1927 in Tala and continues through 1967, when Zina, through her spiritual adoption by Prince Paul Palaiologos-Krive, received the title of princess — a title that became forever linked to her public image and remains so until her death.
The adaptation and direction of the audio series are by Kleitos Kleitou. Marinos Konsolos serves as narrator, while actress Margarita Zachariou voices Zina and recounts her life in the first person. The music is composed by Kostas Kakogiannis.
