Our national youth team kicks off today in the first round of the qualifying phase for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
- The match will be broadcast live on AlphaNews.Live.
Cyprus will face the Faroe Islands at the Ethnikos Achnas Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The two teams are in Group 13 along with Romania, and in last Tuesday’s opener, Romania defeated the Faroe Islands 4-0.
Our national team is aiming for a victory that will secure its qualification today and allow it to compete for first place in the final match against Romania next Monday.
The first qualifying round will be played in 14 groups, and a total of 28 teams—the first- and second-place finishers from each group—will advance to the next phase.
As Cyprus demonstrated in its recent friendly against Japan—and despite the 4-3 loss—the team is in very good form, and as our national team coach stated, the goal is to advance.
“If we manage to win both games—which is what we’ll be aiming for—the benefits will certainly be multifaceted. Our team will gain greater confidence and create better conditions to achieve more as the season progresses,” Nikos Nikolaou emphasized.
Our history
We’ve faced the Faroe Islands three times in UEFA qualifying rounds, and all the matches ended in draws.
In 2006 in Belfast, we drew 1-1; in 2012 in Innsbruck, we again drew 1-1; and in 2017 in Kouklia, we drew 0-0.
In a friendly match, in August 2016, at an international tournament in Finland, we beat the Faroe Islands 1-0 on a goal scored by Elissaios Andreou in the 11th minute.
