AEK defeated Karmiotissa by a decisive 4-1 margin at the “AEK Arena” and remained at the top of the standings after the 8th matchday of the Cyprus League by Stoiximan.
After the match, both the “yellow-and-green” coach, Rubén Sayés, and the visiting team’s coach, Alexis Garpozis, spoke at the press conference.
Key points
Rubén Seyes (AEK): “Congratulations to my players for tonight. It was important that we scored two goals right away. After the opponent pulled one back, there were some challenges we had to manage, but we handled them, scored two more goals, and are very happy to head into the break in first place. Any team that wants to knock us off the top will have to fight hard. The substitutions also helped us a lot. We need to learn how to keep our goal intact. It worries us that we’re conceding goals like this, but over the last four weeks we’ve been talking with the players to correct some mistakes we’re making and that we want to fix. Our performance has had its ups and downs, but the goal is to be the best we can be. Overall, we’ve had some good moments in the game.”
Alexis Garpozis (Karmiotissa): “Over the past week, we’ve had three tough games, and overall we’re satisfied. Today we wanted to keep AEK at bay; we managed to do that for the most part until the 41st minute, but then we conceded two goals for no reason. The second half was our best of the season so far; I’m very pleased, but when we pulled one back, we took risks, showed weaknesses, and conceded two more goals. The score doesn’t do us justice, and I believe we deserved better. We’ll build on our second-half performance. It’s a matter of mentality—we cracked under pressure. We’re giving young players playing time; we want to improve our mindset, but when you play against quality teams, they’ll punish you. We have quality, but we’re not capitalizing on our chances. We need to have more self-confidence.
