Heavy gunfire was heard during the night from Friday to Saturday in Niamey, the capital of Niger, in an area where a military base is located next to the international airport—a site that has already been targeted twice by jihadist attacks—according to residents who spoke with Agence France-Presse.
“We can hear continuous gunfire and explosions near Base 101 in Niamey,” said a local resident. Other residents confirmed the report.
For more than three years, Niger has been ruled by a military junta that seized power promising to restore security and national sovereignty, but it has struggled to put an end to the wave of jihadist attacks sweeping the country.
