School bus routes in Larnaca are being canceled; parents are furious and warn of a strong backlash

They are calling on the Ministry of Transportation to intervene immediately

The Federation of Secondary Education Parents’ and Guardians’ Associations of Larnaca has denounced repeated cancellations of school bus routes, emphasizing that hundreds of students and their families are experiencing serious inconvenience and calling on the Ministry of Transportation to intervene immediately, while warning of a strong reaction from organized youth groups.

In a statement, the Federation “strongly condemns the decision by Cyprus Public Transport, the company that operates school bus routes in the Larnaca district, to cancel scheduled routes, resulting in students being unable to access their schools for days.”

It states that “we consider it unacceptable and unjustifiable for students to be deprived of their right to safe and uninterrupted transportation to and from school, especially when this service is a contractual obligation and families pay the prescribed fare.”

As he notes, any misconduct—which organized parents have condemned many times in the past and have demanded that the government take effective measures to address——must not serve as a pretext for canceling bus routes and victimizing students who bear no responsibility.”

Since the start of the school year, problems have arisen repeatedly, and bus routes have not been operated as scheduled, causing serious inconvenience to hundreds of students and their families, he notes. Of particular concern, it further states, is the fact that, despite repeated complaints, no definitive solution has been provided to date, while the Federation has already been informed that a specific school bus route from the Alethriko area will not operate tomorrow.

The Federation calls on the Ministry of Transportation, Communications, and Public Works to immediately assume its share of responsibility and intervene decisively to ensure that all agreed-upon school bus routes are operated safely.

“It is unacceptable for students to be left without transportation and for their education to be disrupted without immediate and effective intervention by the competent authorities,” it emphasizes.

The Federation calls for the immediate restoration of all routes and the finding of a permanent solution to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Otherwise, it notes, “the response from organized parents will be strong and forceful, aimed at protecting the right of all students in the city and district of Larnaca to safe and uninterrupted transportation to and from school.”

A delegation from the Federation will be in the Alethriko area tomorrow to show solidarity with the students.
