Members of the teachers’ organizations POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK, as part of their mobilization regarding the teacher appointment system in public schools.
In a joint statement issued yesterday, the three organizations stated that the Ministry of Education’s updated proposal “leaves no room for calling off the mobilization,” arguing that ‘the proposal does not provide a substantive response to the concerns of thousands of teachers’ nor ‘does it secure their job prospects or address the injustices that have arisen.’
The teachers note that “to create a ‘closed registry,’ which will lead to temporary appointments with no real prospect of permanent employment,” and they warn that this will perpetuate job insecurity.
For her part, the Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Athina Michailidou, stated yesterday that the Ministry sees no dead end, but that a consultation process is currently underway, while she spoke of a fair and balanced proposal that takes into account teachers with prior service and those who have already passed the exam.
