The EDEK Constitutional Convention is currently underway, where constitutional amendments are being discussed that concern, among other things, contributions by party officials, the sale of real estate, and term limits. New, pointed statements are expected there.

It should be noted that among those attending the Congress are Kostis Efstathiou and Dimitris Papadakis, following the decision to lift the expulsions, former Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou, and former party President Nikos Anastasiou.

Meanwhile, former minister Doros Theodorou was unable to attend the convention due to health reasons. He did, however, in the proceedings and the drafting of the party constitution, submitted his proposals, and emphasized that this is the result of a truly democratic spirit and that it will form the basis for EDEK’s new beginning.

The crucial session began with a speech by President Sophia Christodoulou Makri, who welcomed those in attendance and greeted the returning members. She also emphasized the necessity of EDEK’s existence for Cyprus and society.

At the same time, she noted that “we have a responsibility: not to let this story end with us,” while sending the message that “none of us is greater than EDEK.”

She also called on EDEK members “to prove, through our work, that EDEK can turn the page.”

Referring to the proposed constitutional amendments, she noted, among other things, that the goal is to “draft a Constitution that will ensure equal opportunities for participation, expression, representation, and the right to run for party offices, without unjustified obstacles that limit members’ ability to actively contribute to the operation and direction of EDEK, with clear procedures and rules that will be applied equally to all.”

It should be noted that the Constitutional Convention is taking place amid fresh turmoil within the party, following a letter from eleven members of the party’s Political Bureau, who cited unconstitutional behavior, threats, inaccuracies, and violations of internal party procedures on the part of President Sophia Christodoulou Makri.
