Residents are holding a protest against the planned expansion of the quarry in Sia.
Carrying signs, local residents gathered at the entrance to the quarry to protest the expansion plans, chanting, “We want Sia to stay green.”
Even young children joined the protest, with residents sending the message that “we want green spaces for these babies, our future, our lives.”
The issue was also brought before the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment in late September, with the community leader expressing his deep concern about the impact on Mount Xylias in the event of an expansion.
As noted by George Papaioannou, President of the Sias Residents’ Action Committee, the quarry is located 200–300 meters from residential areas, causing significant disruption to residents and the environment.
He made it clear that “the expansion is a red line,” emphasizing that there will be consequences for both the environment and residents’ quality of life, safety, and daily routines.
