Panathinaikos Amateur Club addressed the issue of matches played with a rigged deck of cards at the women’s level in a statement released following the revelations about the scandal in the world of basketball.
“We were fully justified in the team’s departure from Vyronas last year, as we know we’re playing with a rigged deck at all levels, but we will always stand against them to spoil their game,” the club states.
“We are monitoring all developments in the hope that, at long last, basketball will be set free…,” the statement concludes.
The statement:
“Panathinaikos Athletic Club expresses its disgust at the events coming to light, as the Club’s women’s basketball team had the … ‘honor’ of being yet another ‘victim’ of the scandal rocking Greece.
The management of Panathinaikos A.O. is outraged by what the Club’s women’s basketball team appears to have endured.
All these years, PANATHINAIKOS and its fans have been the ONLY ones in Greece to embrace women’s basketball with major investments and packed arenas, yet the Club’s treatment of the team is nothing short of shameful.
The sport as a whole is going through a tragic period, and aside from our own team, many other teams—even … schools!—have been affected.
We were fully justified in the team’s withdrawal from Vyronas last year, as we know we’re playing with a rigged deck at every level, but we’ll always be there to spoil their game…
Officially, then, we had the away semifinal against Athinaikos on March 23, 2025. If you look back at the game, you’ll see that the free-throw count was 25–7; Jones was ejected for 5 fouls, while Dixon and Tsvitkovich each had 4 fouls. Panathinaikos had made the… mistake of leading on the scoreboard until around the 30-minute mark of the game and then suffered yet another “surgery,” which, as it turns out, was “preplanned.”
For the record, two of the three referees who officiated the game in Vyronas had also officiated the regular-season game at Leoforos.
They… once again forced Panathinaikos into a loss; that’s essentially where we lost first place, and we protested again through a statement.
We are monitoring all developments in the hope that, at long last, basketball will be set free…”.
