The meeting between members of the EOK Board of Directors and the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yiannis Vroutsis, concluded after approximately 40 minutes of discussion between the two sides. We would like to remind you that the meeting took place at Vroutsis’s initiative, following Vangelis Liolios’s resignation during his testimony before the investigator regarding the Greek basketball scandal.
Immediately after the meeting concluded, Yiannis Vroutsis was the first to make a statement, calling for what he had… already announced. Immediate elections within the Federation, in order to restore public confidence in the highest governing body of Greek basketball.
“I called an emergency meeting today with the new president and the Board of Directors of the Basketball Federation. I told them that the public’s trust has been shaken. I respect the Federation’s autonomy and am not imposing my will. I recommend holding elections as soon as possible—immediately, if feasible. At a time like this, whoever is in charge must be beyond question and must derive their legitimacy from a new mandate from the clubs. Holding elections does not hinder the Federation’s operations or, of course, the national teams’ competitive obligations. Until the financial audits are completed, financial aid to the Federation—and only to the Federation—is frozen. Together—clubs and members of the administration alike—we must find a solution.
The government, the Federation, the coaches, and the athletes must all work together to heal this wound.
