A new political upheaval in the Democratic Alarm, with Haris Georgiadis openly taking a stand against Averof Neophytou. In a lengthy letter steeped in bitterness and indignation, he has, for the first time, ruled himself out of the election campaign should his party members grant him a vote of confidence for the presidential race.
“We are faced with the possibility that the faction’s candidate will be a person who now expresses, on most issues, positions that fundamentally diverge from the time-tested positions of the Democratic Alarm. I therefore consider it my political duty to distance myself.”

He also has Anita Dimitriou in his sights. The former Vice President of DISY implies that she was wrong to step down under pressure from Averof Neophytou, whom he points the finger at because of the suspicions thatregarding her run as an independent candidate.

“I could never, as a matter of principle, accept a fait accompli that I believe was shaped under conditions of pressure and blatant political blackmail. Instead of a level-headed political process, it seems that political maneuvering, backroom dealings, and unbridled ambition prevailed.”

Alpha had revealed that Haris Georgiadis was considering entering the internal party race precisely to stand against Averof Neophytou, however, Pamporidis’s candidacy changed his plans. The issue was at the center of his meeting with Nicos Anastasiades, according to reports, on October 16.

Disagreement Among Party Officials
Since this morning, there has been intense concern at Pindarou, with Yiannis Karousos and Dimitris Dimitriou expressing their strong disagreement with the stance of the former deputy chairman. On the other hand, Nikos Tornaritis, in a strongly worded statement, has also taken a stand against Averof.
“Anyone who turns politics into a game of personal survival, using every means at their disposal, sooner or later undermines the very things they are supposed to serve.”

In a video cast by Fileleftheros, Haris Georgiadis responds to those who might consider him a dissenter following his decision.
“If the leadership decides it wants me to leave, I’m at its disposal. This time, I can’t go along with it. Most likely, I won’t do anything; I’ll just disappear.”

While it appears that he, too, isn’t completely closing the door on Christodoulides, he believes that in the second round of the 2023 presidential election, the party could, under certain conditions, rally behind him.
