A deadly accident occurred in Spain, as more than 50 people have lost their lives so far near the Urda station in Toledo following a collision between two trains. In fact, the death toll is expected to rise, according to local authorities.
The incident involved an AVE high-speed train that had departed from Madrid bound for Seville and an Iryo train traveling in the opposite direction.
According to initial reports from Sky News, the two trains were carrying more than 400 passengers; specifically, the Iryo train appears to have been carrying 147 people, while the AVE train was carrying 297 passengers.

According to the newspaper, there are reports that two of the cars derailed and fell onto the ground next to the tracks. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. (local time, 10:00 a.m. Greek time) between the towns of Los Yebenes and Urda, in the province of Toledo.
Service on the line connecting Madrid to the region of Andalusia has been suspended in southern Spain, as announced today by the Spanish railway company ADIF, without providing further details.
“Service on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line has been suspended following a collision between a train and one ahead of it,” ADIF stated in a post on X.
How the deadly accident occurred
Initial reports attribute the train accident to a possible human error, which reportedly led to the immobilization of eight trains. According to initial assessments, a dispatcher at the Atocha control center mistakenly instructed a Renfe train to continue on its route, despite the fact that the Iryo train was blocking the tracks. A collision between the two trains ensued, with the speed of the Renfe train at the moment of impact remaining unknown at this time.
Government sources cite “human error by an Adif operator during a malfunction of the main signaling system” as a possible cause of the accident. As they explain, the safety system operates automatically; however, when it is taken offline, control switches to manual operation. The same sources link the shutdown of the automatic safety system to the immobilization of the trains.
Sánchez’s Initial Reaction
In a post, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that he is “shocked” by the tragic accident, saying in detail:
“I am deeply shocked by the serious train accident that occurred in Toledo. I am in constant contact with the Minister of Transportation, Óscar Puente, and the President of Castile-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page. Emergency services are on the scene to provide the necessary assistance to those affected and to ensure their safety, in coordination with all relevant authorities. “I send my love, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families.”
