Two high-speed trains collided in Spain, resulting in the suspension of service on the line connecting Madrid with the region of Andalusia, in southern Spain, the Spanish railway company ADIF announced today, without providing further details.

According to the Spanish newspaper El País, the accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT) between the towns of Los Yebenes and Urda, in the province of Toledo.

It also reports that there are at least 10 fatalities.

“Traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line was suspended following a collision between a train and a vehicle ahead of it,” ADIF stated in a post on Twitter.

El País cited witnesses who described numerous injuries and the arrival of first-aid teams at the scene. Two of the cars involved reportedly derailed and fell onto an embankment, the report added.

The incident involved an AVE high-speed train that had departed from Madrid bound for Seville and a train operated by Iryo traveling in the opposite direction, according to the report.

Manuel Galán, mayor of Urda, near the central city of Toledo, said he was asked by emergency services to prepare a gym to accommodate the injured.

This is yet another tragic train accident in the country, following the recent derailment of two high-speed trains in Adamuth (Córdoba) on January 18, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of 46 people.
