The heavy rainfall that struck today, Wednesday (Oct. 28), several regions of the country today, with Skiathos and southern Pelion at the epicenter of the storm.
Flooded roads and cut-off communities paint the picture in Magnesia and the Sporades, while earlier, in Platanias, Pelion, the emergency alert (112) sounded, urging residents to move to higher floors.
Over 100 millimeters of rain in Magnesia and the Sporades
Significant rainfall occurred, mainly in the eastern mainland, in Chalkidiki, Euboea, Crete, and the Aegean islands.
As of 5:40 p.m., the highest rainfall totals were recorded in Magnesia (Portaria – 112 millimeters, Zagora – 104 millimeters) and in the Sporades (Skiathos – 102 millimeters).
The map below shows the distribution of rainfall across the country based on data from the network of automatic weather stations operated by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr.
Roads Closed Due to Severe Weather in Skiathos
The situation is also difficult in Skiathos, as heavy rainfall has caused flooding and serious problems on the island’s road network. For safety reasons, the regional highway and sections of the provincial road network remain closed, while residents are urged to limit their travel.
By order of the police, starting at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, October 28, traffic has been prohibited on the Skiathos-Koukounairia road, from the Acropolis area to Koukounairia. The ban also includes the areas of Vasilias, Achladies, Agia Paraskevi, and Troulos, as well as the side streets connected to this road network.
The measure will remain in effect until the dangerous weather conditions subside and safe traffic conditions are restored.
Flooding in Southern Pelion
Meanwhile, the situation is dire in Platanias in southern Pelion, while Civil Protection earlier activated the 112 emergency line, urging residents to take refuge on higher floors to protect themselves from the raging waters.
The stream in Platanias, Pelion, has overflowed, sweeping away everything in its path. The entire right side of the village has been cut off, with no access remaining, while the mayor of the area, Michalis Mitsikos, was stranded in the village.
Mr. Mitsikos described a situation even worse than the one that prevailed on the day Storm Daniel struck the area. As he reported, everything has been flooded, and he appealed to residents with two- or three-story homes to go up to the upper floors to protect themselves from the floodwaters.
“Unfortunately, once again we’ve been hit by a natural disaster—the storm, as you can see. The rain started yesterday but intensified during the day, and Platanias was hit again from three directions,” said Mr. Mitsikos.
“Two hours ago, we were all trapped. Water was pouring down from three sides. No matter what infrastructure projects had been carried out, this water couldn’t be contained,” he said, emphasizing that this was a situation comparable to “Daniel.” “Some ground-floor homes have been flooded; a large amount of water has accumulated—you can see the river. I spoke with the plumber; unfortunately, two wells were lost, just like with ‘Daniel,’” he added.
Problems are also being reported in Chorto, Pelion, where the streets have turned into rivers.
The situation is similar in Milina, Pelion, where torrential waters mixed with mud are flowing into a local beach.
Meanwhile, members of the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) used a boat to transport an injured resident of Platanias in southern Pelion from one part of the village to another. The man had sustained a leg injury and was unable to move on his own, as part of the village was cut off due to the flooding.
Problems were also reported in Makrinitsa due to heavy rainfall.
The weather in the coming hours: when will the bad weather end?
As meteorologist George Tsatrafylias points out, the bad weather is not over yet, as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and significant rainfall totals are expected through late tonight, mainly in Magnesia, the villages of Pelion, the Sporades, Northern Euboea, and the Dodecanese.
Extreme caution is advised in the above areas for the next ten to twelve hours.
Flooding also occurred on Symi
The roads on Symi turned into rivers on Wednesday afternoon (10/28) due to the severe weather that hit the island.
