"this candidacy confirms turkey's hypocrisy"

He described it as a “political oxymoron and a profound institutional contradiction” Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis, noting at the same time that Turkey’s nomination was expected.

When asked about this by CNA, Mr. Letympiotis stated that this particular nomination confirms Turkey’s hypocrisy, which, as he noted, was highlighted by the President of the Republic from the rostrum of the United Nations General Assembly.

“It is, indeed, paradoxical that a country which, for 52 years now, has continued to illegally occupy 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, a member state of the United Nations, and to flout Security Council resolutions, while claiming leadership of the very Organization that was founded to defend international peace, sovereignty, and the territorial integrity of states,” he stated.

The Spokesperson also spoke of revisionism, aggression, and circumvention of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the Law of the Sea, as well as military involvement in regional conflicts and violations of the rule of law and human rights.

As he said, these factors constitute a policy that directly contradicts the Organization’s principles and mission.

“You cannot claim to lead the United Nations when you refuse to respect the principles upon which it is founded. You cannot claim to represent international law when you continue to violate it,” he emphasized.

Referring to the selection process for the new Secretary-General, Mr. Letympiotis noted that it is at an advanced stage and is governed by specific institutional and diplomatic parameters.

He added that the Security Council, when evaluating the candidates, will give due consideration both to the characteristics, qualifications, and track record of each candidate, as well as the stance of the nominating country toward the United Nations Charter, international law, and the decisions of the Security Council itself.

It should be noted that Greece is a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2025–2026 term and will hold the presidency in October 2026.
