After suffering defeats to Tottenham and Liverpool in the league and the Carabao Cup, Chelsea hosted Manchester United, and the chances of a positive result automatically increased.
As… offensive as that may be to Michael Carrick’s team, it equally reflects the harsh reality, with the “Blues” managing to secure a 2-0 victory and having two goals disallowed due to… Estevão’s enthusiasm.
The latter was in Chelsea’s starting lineup in a rare appearance in the team’s opening lineup during the Xabi Alonso era and was quite active, but also enthusiastic enough to score. He found the net in the 15th minute, but the goal was disallowed; he did the same in the 71st minute but met the same fate.
By then, United had also found the net through Cunha in the 34th minute, but that goal was also ruled offside, and it was ultimately in the second half that everything that would decide the outcome of the derby unfolded. With a brilliant individual effort in the 50th minute, Rogers scored with a textbook finish past Lamens to make it 1-0, while Lisandro Martínez “devastated” the Manchester team in a span of four minutes.
He received a yellow card in the 59th and 63rd minutes, was sent off, committed a penalty on Fofana—which resulted in his ejection—and Palmer converted the penalty kick to set the final score of the match.
With the numerical advantage, the “Blues” certainly dominated until the final whistle at “Stamford Bridge,” securing a morale-boosting victory and simply pushing United into even deeper waters of despair and sorrow.
