Radical left lunatics

Greatness didn't go very far. Maybe because at the supermarket checkout, they want you to pay with money instead of greatness. And they don't accept red MAGA hats as rent.

Trump’s favorite label for his political opponents: “Radical Left Lunatics.”

And besides being crazy, they’re also very dangerous people. Men and women alike. Who want their paychecks to last until the end of the month. To be able to pay their rent. To get sick without fearing that, in the hospital hallways, they’ll have to leave behind not just a kidney but a lung as well to pay off their bills.

Extreme stuff. Crazy. It’s a good thing they didn’t add vacations to their list of absurd demands.

And on the other hand, the grandeur. Flags. Hats. MAGA! An America that would be great again. You just have to see what Trump did to the White House. Gold that even Tutankhamun would envy.

Except that the grandeur didn’t go very far. Maybe because at the supermarket checkout, they want you to pay with cash instead of grandeur. And they don’t accept those red MAGA hats as rent.

In any case, we don’t need to start guessing what caused the Democratic tsunami in the November 3 U.S. elections. The polls themselves offer a series of very specific reasons.

Accuracy. Gas prices. Healthcare costs. Everyday life. And a war in Iran that undermined promises to avoid new wars and drove bills even higher. Nearly eight out of ten voters said that inflation had put a financial strain on their families.

And this was reflected at the polls with significant shifts of voters toward the Democrats. Because, after all, a vote has an expiration date. It belongs to no one.

And somewhere along the way, that grandeur came crashing down to earth.

The Republicans lost control of the House and the Senate. They lost seats in traditional strongholds—in Texas, Iowa, and South Carolina. A rebuke so deafening it reached the four corners of the earth. And we caught our breath.

Because of the result. Because of the slap in the face. And above all, because of those people who showed that there is another way to do politics.

James Talarico in Texas. A former teacher, a Christian, with a degree in theology. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. A doctor. The first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. Chris Papas in New Hampshire. The first openly gay man elected to the same body. Deb Haaland in New Mexico. The first Native American woman elected governor of a U.S. state. John Ossoff, who was re-elected in Georgia.

Different people. Different paths. But one message: that there is a place for people whom some would prefer to keep on the sidelines. People who spoke about everyday life. About affordable healthcare. About the issues that really matter to people.

And a second message just as important: the electoral defeat of a political agenda that, for several years now, has been peddling vulgarity as authenticity. A policy that labels opponents as enemies, crazy, dangerous, terrorists, or outcasts. A policy that hands out labels until we grow accustomed to insults as the norm.

An electoral defeat, of course, does not bring about a new dawn. Because Trumpism has deep roots. Roots that have now spread across the globe. It takes persistence. And those who won will be judged by what they do for those who trusted them.

But even if only for a moment, we can catch our breath. Because amid so much suffocation, it’s wonderful to see that fear is being defeated. That the world can demand more. And that humanity still has an audience.

P.S. Musk spent nearly half a billion dollars in support of the Republicans. Nearly 230 million just for the Senate race in Texas. And in the end, the Democrat Talarico was elected. What a night. At the end of the day, it’s one thing to buy a platform and quite another to think you’ve bought the people along with it. Radical left lunatics. They ruined his investment.
