New turmoil in the livestock sector following the blow dealt by foot-and-mouth disease. This time, the uproar concerns the quota for goat and sheep milk used in PDO halloumi.
Livestock farmers are reacting to reports that cheese makers are considering changing the quota.
“Under no circumstances will such a thing be tolerated. The 51% goat and sheep milk content in PDO halloumi will not change and will remain in place through 2027.”

“Voice of the Livestock Farmers” is already preparing its response. Should the situation change, objections will be filed with the European Union.
At the heart of the matter, however, is the very survival of the goat and sheep farming industry itself.
“If everyone doesn’t help the goat and sheep farming sector recover, halloumi will be lost.”
Neophytos Neophytou – President of “Voice of the Livestock Farmers”
He warned that without the support of all stakeholders, the country’s traditional product will be lost.
Currently, the decree reducing the minimum proportion of goat and sheep milk in PDO halloumi to 15%—down from the previous 25%—is in effect, through December 31.
