2028 Presidential election: Campaign machinery is “heating up,” AKEL and DISY on a collision course

References to candidates and behind-the-scenes developments

The Democratic Alarm went on the counteroffensive one day after the AKEL Secretary-General’s remarks during the first discussion held by the party’s Central Committee.

Stefanos Stefanou leveled sharp criticism—including regarding social policy—at the Democratic Alarm, at Nicos Anastasiades for his decade-long rule, and at Nicos Christodoulides as the one continuing that policy.

These
reports prompted a response from Pindarou, who recalled the legacy left behind by AKEL’s administration from 2008 to 2013.

“And if, as AKEL claims, it represents society and integrity, while others represent vested interests, why doesn’t it dare to field its own candidate? Are they perhaps admitting the truth from the outset? Are they indirectly admitting that what they continue to offer society has been tried and has failed?”

AKEL and the Presidential Election

AKEL will finalize its candidate within the first quarter of 2027, though it has not yet clarified through internal party dialogue whether it will select a candidate from outside the party, as was the case with Malas and Mavroyiannis, or whether it will proceed with a party member, something that last occurred in 2008 with Dimitris Christofias.

Should the latter option be chosen, the campaign strategy will, of course, be tailored specifically to Stefanos Stefanou himself.

“Stefanos Stefanou is currently the best the country’s political class has to offer.”
Christos Christofides – AKEL Member of Parliament

In addition to Alma, the Greens, EDEK, and DIPA —with whom discussions will take place—AKEL officials make no secret behind the scenes that the party is interested in a serious discussion with DIKO as well, especially since the centrist party has not clarified its future relationship with Nicos Christodoulides.

Pre-election

On the right and center-right, everyone is awaiting the final decision of the Democratic Alarm party members on November 28—namely, whether Averof Neophytou or Giorgos Pamporidis will receive the nomination.

The Presidential Office is also monitoring these developments, with Nikos Christodoulides being accused by opposition parties of campaigning without admitting it.

“If Nikos Christodoulides is going to be a candidate, that’s up to us—but why has he been campaigning since the day he was first elected?”
Christos Christofides – AKEL Member of Parliament

In any case, the President of the Republic himself does not link his presidential agenda to the 2028 presidential election.
