The united nations is pushing for positive developments

In exactly two months, António Guterres will step down after 10 years, handing over the position to the next UN Secretary-General.

The Cyprus issue is also on the agenda for the final 60 days, and he does not wish to declare it a dead end before leaving the 38th floor of the UN Secretariat building for good.

His task, however, is not so easy, since no interim efforts have yielded results in recent months.

Erciyuman-Olgin

In the wake of Friday’s meeting at the Presidential Palace with Nikos Christodoulides, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy will be in the occupied territories tomorrow at 11 a.m. to meet with Tufan Erhurman.

The main objective is to properly prepare for the trilateral meeting the Monday after next, during which everything will once again be put on the table:
proposals
from both sides, methodology, timelines, meeting documents, and, of course, the much-discussed MOEs, regarding which there has been no positive development so far—a fact that is causing intense dissatisfaction at the United Nations.

Turkish Objectives

The Turkish Cypriot leader returned to the areas occupied by Ankara, where he had been attending the Summit of the Organization of Turkic States, as the pseudo-state holds observer status.

The summit certainly addressed the Cyprus issue, both during the official proceedings and in Tufan Ehriyurman’s meetings, including one with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“We are assessing the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue at the highest level, in full consultation. I would like to thank President Erdoğan once again for his gracious hospitality.”
Tufan Erhürman – Turkish Cypriot leader

With all eyes now on tomorrow’s meeting, everyone is waiting to see whether this new diplomatic momentum can translate into concrete decisions.
