"The reservoirs are now 35.1% full following the recent rainfall," Alexios Frageskou, Executive Engineer at the Water Development Department (TAY). “For this time of year, the inflows are quite good, but they are not enough to dramatically change the water balance,” he noted.
Mr. Frageskou noted that, in light of the recent rainfall over the past 24 hours, the amount of water stored in the reservoirs rose to 35.1%, which translates to 101.9 million cubic meters of water, while the corresponding figure from last year was 31.3 million cubic meters of water and a fill rate of 10.7%.
Alexios Frageskou reported that yesterday approximately 220,000 cubic meters of water flowed into the dams, with the lion’s share going to the Kouris Dam—64,000 cubic meters—and the Arminos Dam—54,000 cubic meters. “The remaining volume was distributed mainly to the dams of the Southern Aqueduct, that is, in the districts of Limassol and Larnaca, while we also had some good inflows at the Asprokremmos Dam and the Evretos Dam,” he added.
“It is extremely positive that we are seeing water flows in our rivers so early in the hydrological year, which makes us particularly optimistic that, with continued rainfall and the first significant rains we’ll have during the winter months, we’ll see water flowing into the dams immediately,” he told CNA. At the same time, he pointed out that last year there was a significant delay in water inflow because the reservoirs had nearly dried up.
“For this time of year, the inflows are quite good, but they are not the kind that will dramatically change the water balance,” he noted.
“Of course, the situation is much more positive compared to last year; however, the reservoirs remain only one-third full, so we cannot consider the water levels in the reservoirs to be secure,” he emphasized.
“Obviously, we cannot afford to be complacent under any circumstances. Moreover, our planning continues as scheduled,” Alexios Frageskou emphasized. “Our projects continue at an unabated pace. It’s just that the rains we had last spring gave us a little breathing room so we could work with less pressure,” he explained.
Referring to the projects planned by TAU, he said that the mobile desalination unit in Episkopi is expected to become operational in the near future, adding that calls for bids for several major projects will be issued shortly. At the same time, he expressed optimism that the projects planned by the Department will be completed within the specified timeframe.
