A tragedy occurred in Nea Filadelfia when an infant died five hours after being born at home.
According to a report by iefimerida.gr, the baby was born naturally, with a midwife present, at home around 1:00 a.m. After the birth, according to reports, the baby was reportedly not breathing normally. The baby then reportedly showed signs of life, and the mother breastfed the baby as usual.
Five hours later, however, at 6:00 a.m., the infant died. The midwife reportedly attempted to resuscitate the infant by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while emergency medical services (EKAV) had already been notified.
The newborn was transported to Agia Olga Hospital, where doctors made every possible effort to keep the baby alive. However, despite their efforts, the infant died.
The medical history of the pregnancy is being examined
The authorities’ investigation is in full swing, with police officers trying to piece together the puzzle and determine what happened during the five hours following the birth.
The midwife’s behavior after the incident is also a key focus of the investigation. According to the same sources, she reportedly left the family’s home and went to work as usual. Authorities are examining her role during the delivery, the actions she took after the birth, and the decisions made during that critical time.
At the same time, the investigation is also focusing on the medical history of the pregnancy, in order to determine whether there were any indications or risk factors that would have made it necessary to deliver the baby at a specialized maternity facility.
According to reports, the mother was reportedly afraid to give birth in a maternity hospital and chose to give birth at home, with the assistance of a midwife. The family has two other children.
The key questions are expected to be answered through the testimonies of those involved, a review of the medical history, and a forensic medical examination. The forensic examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death and clarify whether there was an underlying medical condition or whether complications arose that could have been handled differently.
Speaking to ERTnews, POEDIN President Michalis Giannakos described what they had been told, characterizing the midwife’s decision not to accompany the newborn to the hospital as a “mistake.”
“The mother, along with her husband, took the baby to the hospital, where she was admitted to the maternity ward. She is in good health but is in shock over what happened,” he said, among other things.
Mr. Giannakos noted that there were videos of the child’s birth and that the delivery had been closely monitored. “She breastfed the baby twice, but unfortunately, when she woke up in the morning, she found the baby not breathing. Of course, if this had taken place in a hospital setting, these events could have been prevented,” he emphasized.
