A brutal attack on a 28-year-old woman has shocked New York City; who was stabbed in the neck while jogging on a popular coastal road in Brooklyn. The young woman was found seriously injured by her own father, who had gone out to look for her; according to police sources, she was subsequently pronounced brain dead.
The victim is Katie Suarez, a bank employee, whom her neighbors describe as an exceptionally kind and good-natured person who loved her family.
The attack took place on Friday evening (October 30), shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time, on a route used daily by runners and cyclists.
According to reports, the 28-year-old had gone out for a run while training for the New York City Marathon when she was attacked by an unknown assailant, who stabbed her in the neck.
Her father went out to look for her and found her injured
. One of the most shocking aspects of the case is that it was the young woman’s father who found her at the scene of the attack.
According to police sources, when Katie did not return, her father went out to look for her and eventually found her lying on the path where she used to run.
The 28-year-old was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn in extremely critical condition.
On Saturday (October 31), according to the New York Post, the young woman was declared brain dead.
“She was an exceptional person, very kind and unassuming.”
The news of the attack caused grief in the neighborhood where Katie Suarez lived with her partner.
Neighbors who spoke to the New York Post described her as a low-key, kind, and much-loved woman who worked as a teller at a local bank branch.
“She was very professional, very polite, and a person of exceptional character,” said one of her neighbors.
He explained that the 28-year-old’s demeanor had made a particular impression on him over the years.
“No one deserves to lose their life, whether they’re a good or a bad person. But she was truly special, from what I’d observed in my interactions with her,” he said.
Speaking about Katie and her partner, he added that they were people who treated those around them with respect.
“It’s very sad, because they were good neighbors. We’d see them passing by here all the time, and they always behaved respectfully toward others,” he noted.
Another local resident described the 28-year-old as a woman who was very close to her family.
“She was excellent at her job and had a wonderful personality. She seemed like someone who placed great importance on her family,” he said, adding that she was particularly quiet and sweet-spoken.
Local resident Anna Dis also expressed her grief. “I’m very sad. It’s terrible. I feel sorry for everyone,” she said, adding that violence has now come very close to residents’ daily lives.
“This happened so close to us. There’s just too much going on right now. We’re living in a crazy world,” she commented.
Manhunt for the Suspect
New York City police authorities are continuing their investigation to locate the suspect, who remains at large.
Initial reports suggest the attack may have been random, though the motive has not yet been determined. Investigators are reviewing security camera footage and searching for clues that could lead to the identification of the perpetrator.
Specialized police units participated in the investigation, with the assistance of drones, dogs, and other resources, while a section of the route was cordoned off to search for potential evidence.
The attack has caused great concern among residents, particularly those who use this route for exercise.
This is a coastal area particularly popular with runners and cyclists; however, residents point out that lighting is limited in certain areas during the evening hours, raising safety concerns.
