The minister of agriculture intervened at the very last moment and ordered the decision to be revoked.

They moved bales of hay contaminated with foot-and-mouth disease and transported them to Troulous to be buried at an abandoned quarry. And this was done just a stone’s throw away from livestock farms that have not been affected by the virus.

The decision has caused concern among livestock farmers, who fear that transporting and burying the contaminated material so close to their farms puts their animals at risk.

This morning, livestock farmers rushed to the site in their tractors to block the Veterinary Services’ decision.

And while the Minister of Agriculture was attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the new university school in Larnaca, he immediately issued instructions to revoke the decision.

CHRISTOS SENEKIS—Minister of Agriculture:
“After consulting with the Mayor of Aradippou, we have agreed that he will designate another safe location for them to be relocated to, so that there will be no problems with the livestock farms adjacent to the site where the bales and grain were to be buried.”

According to reports, the contaminated hay has not yet been removed from the site, while this decision by the Veterinary Services has caused a stir, since the first case that infected animals in free Cyprus originated from bales of hay that had been transported from the occupied territories.
